J/24 Midwinter Championship - Day 2

by Christopher Howell 4 Mar 2018 08:33 GMT 3-4 March 2018

Thirty-five teams basked in the spectacular south Florida weather on Saturday as another three races went in the books at the J/24 Midwinter Championship in Miami, FL.

In winds varying between 10-15 knots, Will Welles' Bogus retained a solid hold on first place, now lying with 7 net points in six races. Able to drop a fifth in race four, Welles keeps only firsts and seconds heading in to the last day of competition on Sunday. Tony Parker's Bangor Packet stands in second place with 22 points, four ahead of both Aidan Glackin's Mental Floss and Ron Medlin's Bash.

Parker triumphed in the day's opening duel, with Medlin and Glackin cracking the top three. Welles earned his third bullet of the event in race five, tracked by Parker and Chris Holmes' Bad Moon. Glackin closed Saturday with a victory, as Welles and James Freedman's Miss Conduct watched from astern.

The J/24 Midwinter Championship debuted 40 years ago in 1978 in Key West, Florida. All past winners can be viewed at www.j24class.org/about-the-j24/hall-of-fame/midwinter-champions.

Racing concludes Sunday.
