New, aptly-named Livingstone 24, a Dutch-built global explorer

Here's something new and different, the 78-foot, steel-hulled Livingstone 24, named after the famed British explorer and designed to take you anywhere in the world.

Last summer, its owner, Johan Hartman, who built the boat at his own yard in The Netherlands, drove it for an extended cruise to the Nordic countries before crossing the North Sea and spending two weeks in London.

The Livingstone clearly has a look of its own, reminiscent of a 1930s ocean liner with a unique retro décor, mixed with a Dutch minimalist design and driven by state-of-the-art technologies. Powered by a single 350-hp MAN diesel, the boat cruises at 10 knots, topping out at 10.5.

Hartman designed the boat with Sheerline Yacht Design, and has captained it himself ever since its launch in the summer of 2016. He has been running the Hartman Marine Group in Urk, just north of Amsterdam, for the past 14 years, and built the Livingstone there.

On a family cruise last summer with his wife and seven children on board, Hartman drove the Livingstone along the Danish, Swedish and Norwegian coastlines before settling in at the St. Katharine Docks in London. He believes the boat can serve as a pocket explorer yacht with globetrotting capabilities.

The Livingstone 24 has an open layout and a country style galley. The bridge comes with a large settee so the entire family can enjoy the view underway. The luxurious owner's cabin, with an en suite head and shower, is designed to resemble a loft-style hotel suite. Three more cabins hold up to seven family members or friends.

The covered aft deck is meant for al fresco dining in most weather conditions, a huge sundeck includes awnings for shade, and a seat on the foredeck provides another private space underway or on the hook.

Specs.: LOA: 78'8"; Beam: 22'5"; Draft: 5'9"; Disp.: 104 metric tons; Fuel: 2,773 gals.; Water: 1,320 gals.; Power: 1×350-hp MAN diesel.
