The Melbourne weather played games with competitors in the 2018 Soho Lawyers Australian International Contender Championship.

With rising temperatures and light winds the first couple of days proved tricky and race 1 saw some of the hot favourites further down the leader board than expected. Mark Bulka (AUS 2457) finished ninth and Simon Mussell (GBR 2420) was black flagged. Mussell finished the championship.

Races three and four saw an equally mixed set of results, Bulka finishing 19th and previous World Champion Jono Neate (AUS 2652) 20th. This championship was a warm up to the Worlds with everybody stretching their legs and getting used to the conditions and by the end the names at the top of the leader board were more who you would expect to see. However Bulka's prediction that newcomer to the class Scott Cunningham (AUS 2571) would be one to watch and be challenging for a podium position appears to be coming to fruition, with Cunningham finishing fourth.

Current World Champion Jason Beebe (AUS 2482) showed why he is the man to beat, a consistent score line, apart from one blip, took the Australian title finishing on 12 points.

With the Melbourne weather looking more settled for the week after a blistering 40+ degrees followed by a cool change on Saturday, the cool southerly breeze looks to hold with forecasts of between 10–20 knots for the afternoon each day.

The Aussies dominated the top places in the championships but there's all to play for next week, it's going to be close with 90 boats and 6 World Champions on the course, don't miss a minute.
