Cadet Nationals at Royal Torbay Yacht Club - Day 3

Little Wind on Day 3 of the MDL Cadet Open Championships

Over two hundred young Cadet sailors are taking part in this year’s Marina Developments’ sponsored Cadet National Championships. There are 112 entries in three different fleets racing in the open waters of Torbay in the 10 race series.

After two days of good winds, day three was calm and windless. The start was delayed an hour as race officers waited for what little breeze there was to fill in. At 12 noon the 94 boat fleet (classes A & B) crammed the committee boat end of the start line, and then beat towards a race mark positioned towards Ore Stone Rock. Overnight fleet leader and Cadet World Champion, Sam Carter (aged 16) and his crew Robert Graves (13) aboard ‘Art Attack’ led round the first mark, from ‘Natural Mystique’ sailed by Waldringfield Sailing Club’s Joseph Runnacles and Stephen Videlo. Third at the first mark was Royal Lymington’s Iain Watson and Paul Ellis aboard ‘Sacre Bleu’. There was a steady procession of dinghies around the course, which was finally shortened, with a beat to the finish line. Sam Carter won the race, with Iain Watson snatching 2nd place from Joseph Runnacles.

The sixth race of the series proved just as tricky in continuing light conditions. Sam Carter again finished first, followed by Corinthian Otters Sophie Harrison (‘Stress’) in second, and Toby Harris (‘Grim Reaper’) in third.

With four races remaining, the overall leader is Sam Carter on 13 points, with Sophie Harrison second with 18 points and John Elphinstone (Corinthian Otters) third with a points total of 30.

Leading the B Fleet is Royal Lymington’s Pippa Wilson aged 14, with Parkstone’s Simon Wheeler in second and Helena de Munck from SRNA in third.

Lymington sailors also are in 1st and 2nd positions overall in the C fleet; Poppy & Jasmine Husband lead from Chris Carden and Richard Mason in second with South Cerney sailors Peter Johnson and Joss Haslam a close third.

Results on Tuesday 29th August 2000 after 6 races: (including one discard)
