SB20 World Championship at the Royal Yacht Squadron, Cowes - Overall

by The SB20 Worlds Team 2 Sep 2017 09:27 BST 28 August - 1 September 2017

Those of you who read the news yesterday may be rather surprised to see this headline, but today Jerry Hill, Geoff Carveth and Richard Lovering from Team Sportsboatworld.com took pole position to become the new SB20 World Champions!

The team of three, who yesterday sat in 5th place on the overall leader board, turned heads by gaining enough points in the only race of the day to rocket them into first place, grabbing themselves the title of SB20 World Champions.

This week the Solent has thrown some challenging sailing conditions at competitors and today did not disappoint. The day started with great anticipation amongst competitors however the wind was back to its old tricks and by mid morning racing was delayed. Thankfully crews did not have to wait long and by lunchtime teams were out on the water lining up for what would turn out to be the first and only race of the day.

Yet again tacticians had their work cut out for them with light, shifty winds making conditions tricky. The light winds held out long enough for team Sportsboatworld.com to secure a strong lead in race one before the fleet fell into a wind hole and the waiting game began, with anticipation, to see if another race would prevail.

Sadly a further race was not possible and by late afternoon Silver and Gold fleets were heading back to shore ready for the celebrations and prize giving at the Royal Yacht Squadron.

Today we caught up with the Rear Commodore of Yachting from the Royal Yacht Squadron as well as team Sportsboatworld.com and Henri Lloyd in our daily highlights video.

We would like to thank our day sponsor Henri Lloyd for their generous support of the SB20 World Championships. We hope you enjoyed your day, as it sure was eventful!

Until next time...
