World Champion heads to Torquay for MDL Cadets Open Championships 2000

Over 200 youngsters from all over the country are expected at Torquay next week for the MDL Cadets Open Championships, which take place between Saturday 26th August and Friday 1st September 2000. The Championships are sponsored for the third consecutive year by Marina Developments Limited (MDL) owners of Torquay and Brixham Marinas, and are hosted by the Royal Torbay Yacht Club.

A favourite to do well at this year's event must be 16 year old Sam Carter from Waldringfield Sailing Club. Sam, together with Robert Graves (13) a member of the Corinthian Otters, won the International Cadet World Championships earlier this month in Poland, beating 80 boats from 15 other countries. Racing their two man dinghy, Art Attack, Carter & Graves face tough competition next week - two other UK teams took top 10 places in the worlds and will be hoping to improve on their performances next week in Torbay. This year¹s Marina Developments¹ sponsored national championships will be the last cadet event for the duo; thereafter they both plan to sail in a different dinghy class.

The two handed Cadet Class dinghy is open to children under 18 and is a well-established class throughout the UK. Several well-known sailors started their sailing careers in Cadets including Keith Musto, Rodney Pattison, Chris Law, and more recently Sally Cuthbert.

The Championships comprise an 8 race series, with two races each on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Racing is divided into 3 different fleets; the A fleet for helms over the age of 15, the B fleet for under 15s and the C fleet for novice sailors. 107 entries have already been received from clubs as far afield as the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club in Maldon, Essex, Frensham Pond in Guildford and West Kirby, near Liverpool.
