A mixture of cloud and sunshine and ideal force 3/4 winds greeted the 16 entries of the GP14 UK Youth Championship at Chelmarsh Sailing Club in Shropshire. Dave Griffiss, the OOD, set two long beats and various spinnaker reaches for race one. After one general recall, the black flag was introduced and ensured disciplined starts for all successive races.

In race one, Matt Mee and Andrew Brook of Hollingworth Lake SC soon established the lead, whilst Sarah Collingwood of Chelmarsh SC with crew Chris Warburton of South Staffs SC battled with James Goodfellow of South Staffs SC with crew Tom Simes of Cardiff Bay YC resulting in second and third places respectively.

In race two, the OOD included a long tactical run which caused lots of place changing. Mee was leading from Goodfellow and Collingwood, but Collingwood dropped back after a melee at the gybe mark. Mee missed a gust and lost his lead to Goodfellow, and made way for Gareth Hughes and David O’Callaghan of Hollingworth Lake SC to move up to second place closely followed by Clair Brunner of Chelmarsh SC with crew Helen Robinson of Hollingworth Lake SC. However, both Mee and Collingwood fought back to second and third places but couldn’t quite catch Goodfellow who crossed the finish line first.

Sunday dawned wet but ended in sunshine, whist the winds varied from F3 to F4. In race three, Goodfellow took the lead from Mee followed by Andy Tunnicliffe of Royal Windermere YC with crew Holly Turner of Chelmarsh SC. Goodfellow misread one beat and dropped back. Mee forged clear ahead to win again, whilst the battle for second place went to Collingwood leaving Tunnicliffe in third.

The Championship winner was established and the fourth race held no surprises as Mee lead throughout from Goodfellow in second and Collingwood in third.

The organisers thanked South Staffs Water PLC and Andy Beadsworth whose sponsorship provided the crystal-ware prizes.
