Exeter excel at Bristol's Brew

by Phoebe Scott 6 Dec 2016 07:29 GMT 3-4 December 2016

Bristol Brew, the annual team racing event hosted by the University of Bristol Sailing Club, was held on Chew Valley Lake over the weekend of 3rd-4th December. Eighteen teams, from Bath, Bristol, Cardiff, Exeter, Imperial, London, Southampton Solent, Swansea and the University of the West of England, competed.

The 2016 Brew started with light airs on Saturday and, despite the cold, racing got underway on time. The wind built throughout the day to a steady force 3-4 allowing for perfect racing conditions. After some close and exciting racing, Exeter Black and Bristol Red were both unbeaten at the end of the first day; however, Exeter were ahead with lower average points scored. The teams then headed back to Bristol for a fantastic social on the Saturday night, and the racing got underway in the Gold, Silver and Bronze leagues early Sunday morning.

With more wind than on Saturday, the Leagues were finished by two o'clock, and it was time for the semis and finals. Qualifying for the semi-finals were Exeter Black, Cardiff Black, Exeter Blue and Bath Blue. Exeter Black and Blue both won their semi-finals, and Exeter Black went on to win the Finals in two races.

Well done to the eighteen teams that braved the cold and to the Race Committee (Martin Smethers, assisted by Brew Manager, Phoebe Scott) who managed to run 136 races over the weekend. Many thanks also to CHUMP Nigel Vick and his umpiring team, especially to Bosun (and Commodore), Magnus Lee, who managed to keep the action running smoothly without a hiccup (or even lunch), and to all the volunteers who made the Brew possible.
