Leigh & Lowton Sailing Club Revett Series - Day 2

by Paul Heath 23 Nov 2016 13:01 GMT 20 November 2016

Leigh & Lowton Sailing Club's Revett Series started on the 13th November but, with barely any wind, a majority of competitors decided to stay ashore or go home early and with one light wind (was there any?) drifter of a 'race' there was not a lot to say hence the absence of a report.

This weekend saw a slight improvement in wind conditions as the race team of Paul/Jude Allen, plus Foxy, let the 43 boats launch for races 3 & 4 in a cold north westerly Force 2/3 breeze.

Lasers

First away was the 7 boat Laser fleet. The first three boats home were those that sat out the previous weekend. Paul Heath (LLSC) managed to get his nose in front and, after 3 laps around the cans, he just about held off held the rapidly approaching Bill Busby (LLSC) with Howard Green third.

Handicap

9 boats for the handicap fleet and the race winner, continuing their form from last week, was the Albacore of Mike Banner/Mark Atherton (LLSC) Second was the Phantom of Mark Dingsdale (LLSC) while first on the water but having to settle for third on handicap was the 505 of Chris Jones/Robert Temple (Treaddur Bay SC).

Asymmetric

After breaking the Champaign bottles over the bow of two brand new RS400s 13 Asymmetrics took to the water for a windward/leeward course and it was one of these new boats that took the win. At the front of the fleet there was a close battle between the RS400s of Dave Exley/Nigel Hall (LLSC) and Hamish Gledhill/Simon Dowse (West Riding SC) Eventually they crossed the line in that order with Exley/Hall taking the win but in the final reckoning the boats were split by the Devoti D-One of Mike Allen (Bala SC)

Solo

Brian Sprague (LLSC) improved on his second place last week to take the win in the 9 boat fleet. Chris Helsby (LLSC) was second while the previous race winner Stuart van Den Hoek was third.

Junior

Lorcan Knowles (Topper - LLSC) took his second race win of the series and Brandon Banner (Topper – LLSC) his second runners up spot. Tom Brindley (Laser Radial – Redesmere SC) completed the top three in the 5 boat fleet.

After a hearty lunch served up by Ann, Helen & helpers in the magnificent galley the competitors took to the water again in a Force 2 breeze which soon began to drop off to nothing leaving the Flash like a mirror. Thankfully this was anticipated early on by the race team who set a windward/leeward course for all fleets and shortened the race after 2 laps so everybody could get ashore before it was dark.

Lasers

Heath nosed in front, managed to stay upright (a feat for him) and was glad to be the first boat to the leeward mark as the course was shortened enabling him to take the win in the dying breeze. Behind him there was a battle between Busby and Green which saw Green eventually coming out on top to take second and Busby third.

Handicap

Banner/Atherton took another win while the 505 of Jones/Temple moved up a place into second while the Phantom of Steve Dawson (LLSC) was third.

Asymmetric

Another fleet with the same race winner as before. This time Gledhill/Dowse moved up to finish second with the RS400 of Bill Kenyon/Mark Lunn (Budworth SC) coming home in third.

Solo

And another as the top three were the same as the previous race.

Junior

A change at last as in this race Brindley took the win with Knowles dropping to second and Banner third.

The Revett series runs through to the 11th December and, following a short break, is followed by the New Years Day pursuit race which is then followed by the start of the Tipsy Icicle series which runs through until the 19th March.
