Noble Marine 420 End of Season Championship at Grafham Water SC

by Robert Bellfield 23 Nov 2016 06:59 GMT 19-20 November 2016

42 boats attended the International 420 End of Seasons Championship sponsored by Noble Marine at Grafham Water SC. A really encouraging turnout with plenty of new sailors to the 420 fleet, plus two visitors from Ireland.

The weekend produced plenty of variety with a bitterly cold but crisp 10 kts on the Saturday but followed by a wet and equally cold 18 kts on the Sunday. The standard of sailing was very high, particularly from the large number of newcomers who have benefitted from the excellent class coaching led by the class coaches Neil Marsden and Tim Rush as they start their journey in the 420. The 420 fleet also had a great party on Saturday night - the theme being 'anything other than clothes' - difficult choices to be made in sub-zero temperatures!

The racing was close but it was consistency that paid off with a win for the 'master' Neil Marsden & James Scott, with Robbie King & Marcus Tressler second and Hatty Morsley & Pippa Cropley third. Vita Heathcote & Milly Boyle had three firsts but had to count a 25 which dropped them down to seventh. In a passionate and funny winner's speech Neil made the point that the event was actually the 'Start of Seasons' with so many new boats - and he also wished Robbie & Marcus, and Izi Davies and Gemma Keers, all the best as they prepare to head off for the ISAFs in New Zealand next month.

Next event: Open Training at Draycote on 3-4 December and then the Itchenor Christmas Regatta on the 10-11 December.
