Volvo October Series at Galway Bay Sailing Club - Race 2

by Aodhán Fitzgerald 11 Oct 2005 09:59 BST 9 October 2005

Smyth stays in bed while fleet gets ahead

Forecast gale force southerly winds on Sunday morning resulted in race officers Brendan Furey and Dave Vinnell amending the days planned 2 race programme to just one short race to avoid the worst of the weather. Despite the ominous forecast a 10-boat fleet lined up to start at 11am. After a tight start the fleet headed for the Leverets Lighthouse, the first mark on the course.

The wind increas ed as the fleet left the shelter of Renville and Peugeot Motocyles (Baynes, Fitzgerald, McMahon and O'Tuairisc) started to revel in the strong winds leaving Martin Breen's "That's Life" in its wake. After rounding the Lighthouse the fleet then faced a tough beat to the "Cockle rock" mark. Most boats were reporting gusts of 45 Knots on this leg. These conditions suited the heavier boats such as "White Dolphin" in Class two. From Cockle Rock the fleet enjoyed a wild downwind leg with just "Peugeot Motocycles" and Tomas Furey on "RhoCoDar" flying spinnakers on the leg. "Rhocodar" went in to spectacular broach however, which resulted in one crewmember doing a little unplanned swimming!

On the next leg which was upwind to "Cockle rock" Peugeot Motocycles" were well ahead when a tear started to open on their mainsail, despite this however they managed to hold it together and hit speeds of 16 to 17 knots on a wild reaching leg back into the finish line at the club. Next to finish some 9 minu tes later was "That's life" followed 2 minutes later by Henry Lupton's First 31.7 "Quelle Surprise".

The windy conditions resulted in sail damage to a lot of the fleet, with "Siamsa" (Bruzzi/Kavanagh) and "Ibaraki" retiring.

Race 2 Results:

IRC:
1st Peugeot Motocycles (Baynes/Fitzgerald/McMahon,O'Tuiarsc)
2nd Quelle Surprise (Henry Lupton)
3rd White Dolphin (Kevin Heery)

Echo:
1st "Peugeot Motocycles"
2nd "White Dolphin"
3rd "Silver Foam" (Cormac Mac Donnacha)

It is planned to hold two races on Sunday next if suitable conditions prevail.
