Harken 29er Grand Prix Round 3 at Poole Yacht Club

by Bella Fellows 28 Oct 2016 16:32 BST 22-23 October 2016

Forty 29ers attended the 3rd Harken GP event of the 2016/17 season, a strong turnout especially in light of the fact 12 of the front end of the fleet were travelling to Lake Garda for the Eurocup.

Saturday started off with plenty of fog and light winds so racing took place in the harbour after initial plans to head to the bay were shelved. With strong winds forecasted for the next day the fleet completed five races in light to medium conditions on Saturday with the wind building gradually throughout the day. The winners of race 1 were Charlotte Omerod and Daniel Lewis who went on to get bullets in the following two races. They were followed by Bobby Hewitt and Matthew Leckie who got a second in race 3 as well. Also posting consistent results on the first day were Harvey Martin and George Tardrew who got two firsts and a third as well as Bella Fellows and Anna Sturrock who got all top 5 results. Charlotte and Dan led overnight by six points with Harvey and George and Bella and Anna on joint points in second and third. Bobby and Matt closely followed in fourth place.

Sunday was much breezier with winds consistently over 15 knots for all three races. Will and James Cunliffe were the most consistent of the day posting a 1,2,4. James Hollis and Jake Hardman won race seven by a large margin, they moved up to fourth to finish ahead of Matt and Bobby on joint points. The winners of race 8 and 6th overall were Ed Norbury and Ben Todd. The top three remained unchanged despite both Charlotte and Dan and Bella and Anna getting Ocs in race 7. So Charlotte Ormerod and Daniel Lewis won the event and are the first mixed pair to win a GP event as far back as we can recall. After the win at GP2 by Hannah and Emily this means that the gender split of those that have won a GP this series is 50:50.

First juniors were Chris James and James Hall. Thanks to the race committee and to Poole Yacht Club for hosting the event.
