Volvo RS Feva Grand Prix Selector at Exe Sailing Club

by Frankie Upton 10 Oct 2016 17:45 BST 8-9 October 2016

94 teenagers in 47 dinghies from all over the UK competed in the Volvo RS Feva Grand Prix Selector at sea, off Exmouth, over the weekend of 8 & 9 October.

Stevie Morrison, former 49er World Champion and Double Olympian shared his experiences of sailing at Exe Sailing Club, his home club and host for this major national circuit event. He then presented the main Volvo and Magic Marine sponsored prizes to the top six places.

Dolphins playing alongside the fleet before race four got underway on Sunday morning was an unexpected highlight for many - a special treat for the competitors to experience so close to hand.

Phil Morrison laid good courses in shifty wind and six competitive races were completed over two days. Some of the young sailors were competing not only for their best position in this competition but also for a place in the RYA National Squad or RYA Zone Squads - this being the last indicator event before the selectors decide.

The winners were Ewan Wilson & Roscoe Martin of Wormit Boating Club, Scotland. Second were Alexander & Bertie Ratsey of the Royal Western YC, Plymouth.

Seven local Exe boats took part and for many it was their first major competition. The highest place Exe Boat was that of Sandy Bailey & Jack Francis.

Local businessman, Richard Jacobs kindly loaned his boat 'Fairline' which provided the perfect platform to manage the racing and Peter Gilbert lent his motor launch for oversight of the safety fleet. Peter Dixon Chandlery, local to the club also supported the event - providing some motivational spot prizes for ten teams outside the top six.

Event Organiser, Frankie Upton said, "This has been a great event for our club to host, with good competition out on the water and dolphins too! It's been a great class to work with. Many of our visitors had never been to the Exe before, whilst others were brought by parents who themselves were last here in their teenage years. The feedback we've had so far is that they would like to come again. We hope so, and thanks to all in the club and the local community who that contributed to making it such a success."
