Mersea Week and Mersea Town Regatta 2016

by Chrissie Westgate 29 Aug 2016 13:54 BST 22-27 August 2017

Mersea Week is a sailing regatta organised jointly by the Yacht Club and the Dabchicks Sailing Club on Mersea Island.

With an organising committee that has many years of experience and expertise in race management, the event is steadily increasing in popularity. This year there was a record entry of nearly 200, coming from many different UK clubs, travelling far and wide to take part.

Much to the delight of the competitors, Mersea Island and the River Blackwater provided near perfect conditions for the daily racing. The boats ranged from dinghies and ancient fishing smacks, to classic historic sailing craft, with appropriate courses for all.

Throughout the week the boats could be seen from the shore on Mersea Island providing a spectacular sight for local people and the many visitors. Entertainment was provided in the evenings making this an event not to be missed.

A former very popular contestant in Mersea Week was local girl and Olympic Gold medal winner, Saskia Clark. Julian Lord, Chaiman of the Mersea Week committee, said "competitors of the races were truly delighted to have Saskia in attendance to present their trophies."

The Committee were truly grateful to Adnams, Hempel Paints, West Mersea Oyster Bar, Micro Scooters, West Mersea Marine, Quest Motors, Fenn Wright and Peter Clarke's Boatyard who all sponsored and supported the event.
