Zhik 2016 66th Cadet National Championship at the WPNSA - Day 3

by Ian Harris 26 Aug 2016 08:53 BST 22-26 August 2016

Unplanned lay day so mini 'Olympics of Silly Sports'

The opening days of the Cadet Nationals championships have been a test of both patience and light wind skills. The PRO Arky Wainwright and his team have been set the most challenging task in the fickle and shifting breezes, their race management and decision making has provided seven excellent races to date, with today being lost to the weather gods as Weymouth harbour glistens in a flat calm and afternoon sunlight.

After a succession of long delays (which was long enough to hold a mini Olympics of silly sports) the racing was abandoned for the day. Many of the competitors have enjoyed swimming and paddle boarding, or being terrified on inflatables behind the ribs, but they have all had a lovely day out in the sun.

It remains a tight battle at the top of the leader board with Jamie Harris/Antonia Wilkinson 10 points clear of Ellie Wooton/Ameilia Mayhew after their series of 5 consecutive wins. Ellie herself is a single point in front of early pace setters Megan Ferguson/Yasmin Sfaxi. Cadric Boven/ Emile Marien heading up the chasing pack.

In Silver a superb series of results from Anna Wooton/Imogen Mayhew puts them in the middle of the gold fleet in 12th place. Kate White/Rhona Enkel are also excelling with a string of top 20 results. Hazel Whittle/Charlotte Leigh are 3rd.

The Cadet is a challenging boat to sail. It is a boat that requires finesse, delicacy and concentration to make it work especially in light airs. The light winds and the pressure to do well in a big national championship have seen many of the favourites struggling for pace. As this pressure mounts going into the final day with light wind forecast yet again, it will be those that can keep their cool, their concentration and touch who will do well.

Being surrounded by hills and mountains has the inevitable effect So far the conditions on Lake Lipno have provided for excellent and challenging sailing, however being surrounded by hills and mountains can mean that the winds are shifty and can be light at time, and this proved to be the case on day 3.
