Gill / Harken / Seamark Nunn Cadet Week at Waldringfield Sailing Club

by Andrew Nunn 22 Aug 2016 09:15 BST 13-17 August 2016

The final day of Waldringfield Cadet Week – generously supported by Gill, Harken & Seamark Nunn – saw a showdown between the overnight leaders 9877 Hattie & Hamish Collingridge and 9962 Cara Bland & Inés Green who trailed by 2 points but very much in contention, along with the other two GBR World Team Members 9876 Ellie Wootton / Amelia Mayhew and 9983 Katie Spark / Connor Line.

Race 10 got underway in brilliant sunshine and a freshening F3-4 with 9962 Cara / Inés leading at the windward with 9877 Hattie / Hamish chasing in 2nd, however the leaders held their nerve and took the win from Katie / Connor 2nd and 9994 Lucie Nunn / Elouise Mayhew in 3rd, while Hattie/Hamish had dropped back to 4th. This put the two leading boats on equal points going into the final race.

Race 11 saw Cara/Inés pull out a massive lead early on to take a convincing win and the overall Cadet Week title. Meanwhile a very consistent Katie/Connor again finished 2nd again and far enough ahead of Ellie/Amelia to leapfrog them and take 3rd overall.

The Cadet Gold Fleet was dominated by female helms who filled the top 11 places overall! 9374 Angus Collingridge was the first male helm in 12th overall.

In the Cadet Silver Fleet 7337 Ollie Meadowcroft / Gracie Joslin fired in two more bullets to win overall from 8449 James Russell / Tristan Whittle who pushed them hard over their 5-race series. 9032 Charlotte & Harrison Leigh finished a creditable 3rd overall.

In the Laser Radials Ed Harris scored two wins to win overall from Louis Lappage from Fishers Green SC and Archie Goodhead in 3rd.

So ended a wonderful week of sunshine, good breezes, competitive racing, coaching and above all a massive amount of fun for everyone. Our thanks must go to the event sponsors Gill, Harken & Seamark Nunn who provided branded rash vests for all competitors and some excellent prizes for pretty much everyone.

The Cadets now head down to Weymouth for their National Championships at WPNSA which start on 22 August, while the GBR World Team will continue their preparation for the Worlds in Buenos Aires in December – we wish them the best of luck!
