Harken Musto Skiff Nationals at Largo Bay Sailing Club - Day 1

by Rick Perkins 11 Aug 2016 21:32 BST 11-14 August 2016

It's great to be back in Scotland once again, with a warm welcome from Largo Bay Sailing Club.

Race 1 got away after a general recall, with the leaders coming in from the right including Dan Kilsby, Dan Trotter and Alex Knight. The breeze was stable in direction and around 12-15 knots but with gusts up to 20 knots which allowed for changes throughout the fleet downwind. Dan Trotter pulled through to take the win from Knight and Kilsby in 3rd.

Race 2 required a slight course shortening and the fleet got away at the first go, with the right side of the course again paying. Leader at the windward mark was Neil Ashby, closely followed by Dave Poston. Again, the downwind tactics were where places could be gained and lost. Poston held on to take the win from Ian Trotter and Neil Ashby.

The last race of the day got away promptly after the finish of race 2. This time it was newcomer to the class, Fynn Sterritt, who rounded the weather mark first followed by a group including Poston, both Trotters and UK class chairman Ben Schooling. Sterritt held on up the second upwind leg but was finally overhauled.

A positive experience at the Stokes Bay Skiff Open I sailed the Stokes Bay Skiff Open using the Musto Skiff X mainsail. Saturday was Northerly 5-15 knots and Sunday was Northerly 7-20 knots. Both days were very gusty and shifty. I'm 74kgs, 5'10" and lightly built these days from too much cycling! Posted on 29 Apr
