Sunday July 31st in the Menai Straits brought light and shifty North Westerly winds, and the last hour of foul tide, for the start of the Yachtshop Anglesey Offshore Dinghy Race, organised by Red Wharf Bay Sailing and Watersports Club.
55 monohulls and 3 catamarans started on the Royal Anglesey line bound for Red Wharf Bay's finish line at Traeth Bychan. The 15 mile course passed down the Menai Strait, through Puffin Sound, by then with a strong ebb tide under the fleet, across Red Wharf Bay, turning at Benllech and Moelfre. Conditions changed frequently from near planning/hiking to the frustration of being becalmed. The first boats finished after 3 and half hours.
The winner of the Slow Handicap fleet was Peter Hallitt from Pennine Sailing Club in a Laser, followed by Huw Powell and Hannah Entwistle from Red Wharf Bay SWC in a 2000. The Fast Handicap fleet was won by the Kestrel of Phil Howarth and Mike McCaldon of Coniston SC, followed by the RS400 of Stuart Hallman and Anna Walsh of Leigh and Lowton SC. The winning catamaran was the Prindle 16 of Dave and Julie Cocker from Red Wharf Bay SWC.
