National Twelve Open at Twickenham Yacht Club

by Mike Day 26 Sep 2005 08:55 BST 25 September 2005

Seven Twelves took to the water for the last Thames Area meeting of 2005 at Twickenham. The breeze through the trees intermittently reached water level and changed direction randomly and suddenly throughout the day, with a dead patch on the line to add to the fun.

Race 1 saw Mike Day & Anne Murch (N3496) get the best (running) start and lead to the first mark before Graham Camm & Zoe Ballantyne (N3492) pulled through and went on to stretch out a good lead over the five laps from Day & Murch. Mike & Alex Storey broke clear of the bunch to take a clear third.

The gusts throughout Race 2 caused capsizes and gear failure, but the same boats finished first and second, with Pip Deverson & Sophie Edwards (N2700) third.

This gave Camm & Ballantyne the meeting with a race to spare and they elected to sit out the final race, which was won by Day & Murch, with Deverson & Edwards second and Chris Deverson & Jess Martin (N3110) third. With this win, Camm & Ballantyne also became Thames Area champions for 2005.
