D-One UK National Championship at Royal Torbay Yacht Club - Day 1

by Chris Sallis 9 Jul 2016 07:15 BST 8-10 July 2016

Race 1 & 2 were sailed in a force 3 south westerly with large shifts and varying pressure. In race 1 Nick Craig and Humphrey Carter made the early running with Giles Chipperfield and Chris Sallis benefiting from a big swing to the right on the last beat. The final order was sorted out on the last gybe to the line with Craig taking the win from Sallis and Chipperfield.

After a quick reset the RO got race 2 away, Craig was well placed again with Al Hall and Tim Garvin in the lead group. By the second downwind Martin Browne and Ben Falat had pulled to the front. Pressure was key downwind and Craig, Browne and Falat hooked into a big gust and extended on the fleet. These 3 stayed ahead and finished in that order. At the end of day one Craig had 2 bullets for a perfect start to the defence of his title.

The fleet enjoyed a reception at the yacht club where Al Hall was presented with 'The Mug of the Day' for unfortunately converting a position in the lead group into a wipe out on the gybe! With more breeze forecast for the Saturday the fleet are looking forward to 3 races on the bay.
