Volvo GJW Direct Topper National Series in Plymouth

160 sailors and their support crew aimed for Sir Francis Drakes old stomping ground, would some high jinks on the water from the Topper sailors in the footsteps of Drake be in store!!First off the Mount Batten centre felt they were invaded by 100 plus double stack trailers finding enough space was a logistics that Drake could have solved with a few cannons.

Saturday started light and bright and just what you need from an open water event for the Topper crew. With as usual the 4.2s and 5.3s were separated and the ROs set up just left of the pier but still quite a distance from shore and only those with booty of large telescopes the like of Drake used were able to get an idea of what was happening.

5.3s started and the first race saw a 12 year old Sam Jones showing the older guys where the wind was coming from. Callum Bell tussled the win off Sam on the last leg. Lorcan Knowles took the other for the series opener. Conditions of 8-10 knots kept the racing on day one quite well balance between the age and ability range. Overnight Callum was on top with some good performances from Timothy Hartnell, Harris Cartwright, Christine Wood and Millie Aldridge.

4.2s had a course a little closer to the shore and Iwan Roberts James Deaton and Thomas Williamson kept consistency up to be in good positions overnight. 10 year old Thomas Willett put in some great results and Catherine Albone and Maisie Bristow had a battle with the boys and themselves, 5 races completed and a pleasant evening relaxing for the following days races.

Drake with his long telescope would not have seen too much on Sunday morning; rain fog and not really looking like summer. All sailors jollied themselves up for a trip out to a dank windy day. 5.3s where sent out to our man with the telescope's island. Any Topper sailor who maybe a future privateer, sea captain, navigator, slaver and politician, may get an island named after them though I think they aren't too many new islands.

With visibility so poor I have no idea what went on so the only thing to do is look at the results below. From the results a shout out to Catherine Albone for a bullet Dan Perkins for a 1st loser bullet Ben Purrier and Samuel Brackley all getting a cross bow from Drake in the 4.2s. In the 5.3s Elliot Kuzyk probably had an overnight chat with Sir Francis as he pulled his results up Lorcan taking another cannon ball and Nicholas Welbourn Samuel Cooper Morgan Archer all catching one from the race committee ship. Christine Wood kept a little more consistency over Millie Aldridge and Ishbel Zurmond did the honours for the girls.

As always the class thanks its helpers and at this event thanks were given to Jeanette Sanderson thanks also to Datchet to Volvo Cars UK, GJW Direct,Optimum Time and Sailing Solutions by Rooster our very generous sponsors. Our next event is the Carsington national series incorporating the Wallys on Water charity fund raiser on the 16th-17th July.
