Laser Open at Hollingworth Lake Sailing Club

There are times when Race Officers have to face nightmare conditions for sailors, and so it was for the Laser Open at Hollingworth Lake on Sunday. The forecast was for the post-thundery conditions of the week to leave variable or no wind from a mixture of directions and low cloud. But 20 Laser sailors decided to try their hand, including 10 visitors from Dovestones.

The day started with light wind and the Dovestone sailors were well to the fore, with Ian Jones taking the first win ahead of 14-year old George Pulman. Of course the wind filled in better while lunch was taken, as so often happens! The second and third races were to be sailed back-to-back. The problem was to decide where the start should be as the wind now appeared likely to fill from the south, instead of east. It did not take Ian Jones long to take the lead again, with similar results to the first race as the leaders got clear away. For the third race, Ian Jones decided to stay ashore, having won the meeting, and leave others to struggle in the light air conditions, as did several others. The subsequent finishing order stayed much the same.

The host Club's young sailors were led by 12 year old Will Rowland finishing 9th and 13 year old Evan Parry 10th, while the leading Radial sailor was Adam Din (14) finished 12th on handicap.

Ian Jones thanked the Race team of Julian Parry and David Smith for doing all they could to ensure a good event.
