Topper Northwest Area Championship at Bassenthwaite Sailing Club

There was a disappointing attendance of only 8 entries for this event, believed to be the first time held at Bassenthwaite. Perhaps this was caused by the poor weather forecast, of very light winds and rain.

This was borne out on the Saturday, when only two races were possible. Leigh and Lowton are led overnight with the top three places, Lorcan Knowles in the lead with a 1st and 2nd, and Brandon Banner next with a 2nd and 3rd. Lorcan continued his good form on Sunday, when the wind was better although very shifty, with 3 wins to collect the very impressive NW Area Championship Trophy.

The Championships were held in conjunction with a Laser Open on the Saturday and a Solo Open on the Sunday, which led to some bunching at marks with Toppers and Solos vying for position. It was good to see the Toppers standing their ground and threatening to protest Solos for barging into spaces where they were not entitled to be.
