CARNAGE REIGNS, PRINCESS ANNE VISITS
There was a lot of crash and burn on Day 4 of the Basilica J/24 World Championship. Strong winds (18+ building to 25 knots) from the west, with building seas sent the fleet rocking and rolling around the race course. The shreds of sails, broken rudder, mangled bow pulpit, broken tiller, and another boat holed provided Princess Anne with lots to view as she watched the racing, met with teams on the dock, and participated in the daily prize giving.
Race 7, the first race of the day, started with the regular general recall. The Race Committee has made the black flag a permanent fixture in the starting sequence. The restart sent the fleet off cleanly, with the starboard end of the line favoured by the fleet. 4 boats acknowledged OCS and spent a miserable hour and one half waiting in screaming conditions waiting for Race 7 to finish.
Max Skelly on Murder Picture (USA), one of the leading contenders through the week, was an early carnage victim. After sailing to a strong second position to Ian Southworth’s Enchidna (GBR), Murder Picture’s rudder exploded on the 2nd downwind. The lost rudder cost Murder Picture a strong finish in Race #7 and sent them back to the dock for the balance of the day.
Enchidna (GBR) held her lead to finish 1st, Alejo Rigoni sailing Luca Vive (ARG) finished 2nd, and Bruschetta, helmed by Mauricio Santa Cruz (ITA) finished 3rd. Numerous boats were observed with main sails down to make repairs between the races.
Race #8, second race of the day, found the breeze and seas building. Two boats retired before the start. At the start, the fleet was spread across the starting line, expressing a desire to start cleanly under the conditions. Alistair Clarke driving Serco Defence (GBR) was first to the windward mark. Serco Defence, which had a disappointing regatta to date, had been wired for sound and video by Sail TV for the race. Princess Anne arrived on the course to watch the race with Great Britain in the lead.
Race #8’s wild conditions created more breakdowns and woolly conditions. Wednesday’s strong finisher, Luigi Ravioli sailing Fiamma Gialla (ITA), was involved in an incident with Jobs for the Boys, Sean Kirkjian (AUS), sending the Australian boat back to the hoist with a hole, and the Italians looking for a new bow pulpit and jib.
Few boats escaped the day without breakdowns or at least a broach. One boat turtled their boat, requiring two crew scramble to right it. Fortunately, there were no known serious injuries to any of the crew, but the damage to the boats created a very large shopping list back at the dock. The search was on for masts, rudders, forestays, tillers, and lots of new sails.
The final race of the Basilica J/24 World Championship will be sailed on Friday, September 16th. The weather forecast calls for more extreme conditions.
