The Lord Birkett Memorial Trophy at Ullswater Yacht Club, which had a record number of entries in 2015, is a finalist for Cumbria Tourism Event of the Year.
The club is delighted that the Birkett is one of four events to be shortlisted, the first time a sailing club has featured in the awards. The winner is decided by a public vote through the Cumbria Tourism website and now the race is on to get all Birkett lovers to vote by the closing date of June 6. The winner will be announced on June 22, just over a week before this year's event on July 2 and 3.
"We are thrilled to be shortlisted for these awards. We now doing all we can to get everyone to vote for us," said UYC Commodore Peter Lewis.
"The Birkett symbolises what UYC stands for - everyone sailing together, sharing a love of our beautiful lake. Competitors not only sail through spectacular Cumbria scenery, the full length of Ullswater, but they are also commemorating Lord Norman Birkett who made it possible by preventing the lake becoming a reservoir in the 1960s. To win this prestigious award would be a great boost for the club."
Voting is via the GoLakes website at www.golakes.co.uk/do/vote-event-of-the-year.aspx
Last year's Birkett has a record-breaking entry of 231 boat and this year entries are coming in fast through SailRacer at goo.gl/AzFj3l
