Bassenthwaite Sailing Club has been awarded £3912 of National Lottery funding from Sport England's Flood Relief Fund to improve electricity distribution at the club which was badly damaged as a result of Storm Desmond.
The recent storms and floods devastated homes, businesses and infrastructure across the country and also had major impact on sports facilities, particularly sports pitches and water sports centres. In December, Sport England launched the £200,000 Flood Relief Fund in a bid to help clean up and repair sports pitches and facilities and get them back up and running.
Bassenthwaite Sailing Club will use its £3912 award to make significant improvements to the electricity distribution system at the club, re-siting the current system above previous flood levels where possible and introducing waterproof systems to the outbuildings.
Jennie Price, Chief Executive of Sport England, said: "We appreciate that sport isn't a major priority when people's lives, homes and businesses are at risk. But once communities are starting to get their lives back to normal, being able to use their local pitch or sports club as usual can make a real difference.
"By launching this fund quickly to help with clean up and repair costs, I hope we can give people affected by the floods one less thing to worry about."
"We are delighted to be able to get this emergency funding to Bassenthwaite Sailing Club to help it get back up and running as soon as possible."
Mark Somerville, Commodore at Bassenthwaite Sailing Club said: "We are delighted that Sport England has awarded this funding to us which will allow us to improve our electricity distribution system and continue to provide fantastic sailing facilities in the area with increased resilience to future flood events."
