Royal Thames Yacht Club Cumberland Cup - Day 3

by Sarah Hornby 6 May 2016 22:44 BST 4-7 May 2016

Southern YC hanging on to the lead

Light and fickle winds made for an AP signal this morning, the initial conditions proved a tricky obstacle for teams and race management, but as soon as the wind picked up and the racing was underway, there was no stopping the race management team, as PRO Jo Lucas packed in the races, Jo commented: 'This morning was a little challenging, but this afternoon was beautiful, and the sailors were well bahaved too!' After 3 days of sailing, 60 races have been completed.

This is the first year that Gamla Stans Yacht Sällskap from Sweden have participated in the event, and the team are thrilled to be here, Thomas Lund one of GSYS' helms stated: 'This has been an excellent event so far, fantastic socially, great organisation, despite the fact that we are in a league of our own we are very much enjoying ourselves.'

Southern Yacht Club of New Orleans are yet again the overnight leaders of the event, Team Cardwell Potts commented: 'Our performance has been quite good, not many races have been easy, there are battles throughout all the races and non of them are over until the last beat, it's non stop action, in two on two boat, manoeuvres happen anywhere on the course, it's all about pinning someone out, NYYC and RTYC races have been particularly challenging.'

The teams have enjoyed a fun filled social programme, including an evening at Hampton Court Palace as well as a drinks reception with RTYC's Commodore The Duke of York at 60 Knightsbridge. RTYC Vice Commodore and event umpire Bernard Kinchin stated: 'Our Commodore welcomed the sailors to the Royal Thames and took time to speak to them individually, which was a great privilege for the sailors and the response was fantastic.'

Tomorrow is the last day of the event, with Southern, New York and RTYC looking strong it is sure to be a lively final.
