Solo & Laser Open at Harlow (Blackwater) Sailing Club

by Alan Jackson 8 Sep 2005 08:52 BST

Bright sunshine and fair winds brought out the best that the Blackwater has to offer on a gentle flooding tide as the Laser and Solo, Harlow (Blackwater) S.C. open got under way. The club was pleased to see a fleet of old friends and new faces join a small but perfectly formed home fleet. The 20 strong Laser fleet was first away with a keen start followed by the close hard fought 4 race series with much place changing and the usual jolly banter around the Blackwater favoured course (Blackwater Bermudan triangle). Marks Doctor, Coopers, Steeple with the eventual winner being Paul Weeden showing excellent boat handling and tactical wizardry and Brian Sergeant putting in a good consistent score line follow by Dave Griffith who also put in a sound series and narrowly lost the last race.

The Solo Fleet being a gathering of gentlemen, 16 in total, sailed the event with a poetical style of sailing with flowing formation rounding of the marks and precision moves right up to the last race, in which Mr Clark threw first place out the pram, rounding Coopers the wrong way, which was quickly dobbed into the race box by his dear lady wife Mrs Clark who then promptly lost the right to the Chinese take away on the trip home but a good helping of bunny pie. The winner Mark Maskell sailed a good series rounding all the marks in the right direction with Claire Clark in contention all the time and finishing 3rd .

It was a happy event and a job well done by the Club team with special thank to Mrs Henderson for outstanding performance in every department. The H.(B).S.C. opens it’s doors to the Fireball Class on the 17th /18th to finish of this years open events and is looking forward to special entertainment supplied by the home fleet! Now read on...
