An exciting new venture for the Hansa Class Association UK has happened!! The very first Hansa Scottish Traveller took place on Saturday 9th April 2016 at Galloway Activity Centre, near Castle Douglas, Dumfries and Galloway. This event was hosted by South-West Scotland Sailability, which is the newest Sailability group in Scotland only starting 2 years ago after the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Racing the Hansa Class of dinghy is spreading across Scotland providing fun and challenge for sailors of all ages. The youngest competitor was 14 and the oldest 60.

The day was sunny but cold and the wind light in the morning but strengthened after lunch providing some exciting racing conditions for the sailors. The racing was extremely close and all the competitors reported enjoying the challenge greatly. It was the first time some local sailors had had the opportunity to meet and race with sailors from other parts of Scotland.

Class Winners:

Hansa 2.3 Class
Stephen Laycock, 470 (Southwest Scotland Sailability at Galloway AC)

Hansa 303 One Person Class
Rory McKinna, 2284 (Clyde Cruising Club at Bardowie)

Hansa 303 Two Person Class
David Ramsey & Jessica Campbell, 2464 (SSS at GAC)

The Race Officer, Richard Hermon, provided a course that proved excellent for the sailors challenging their boat handling skills. Safety Cover was provided by Iain Braithwaite and his team but fortunately, despite the gusts, they were only called upon to ferry one cold competitor to the warmth of the clubhouse. The Waterfront Cafe, staffed by Tash and Teagan, kept everyone topped up with bacon rolls, home-made soup and the famous home-made cakes.

The day was also enjoyed by the family of supporters who helped in so many ways, smiling and meeting new folk. We hope to meet them again at the Hansa Scottish Traveller 2 at Clydemuirshield Country Park, Castle Semple Sunday 8th May 2016.
