Insight into the P&B workshop

For this week’s news we thought we would give some insight into the current projects moving through our workshop:

We have a double-diagonal veneer built Flying Fifteen in the workshop. Our customer has asked us to fair below the water-line and strip back to bare wood and then re-varnish the top-sides. To achieve the desired effect, the hull was long-boarded and then painted with eight coats of Duropox which has the advantage of being able to be built up “wet-on-wet”. Once the drying process is complete it was again long-boarded flat and cut back to 1500 grit ready for polishing.

The top-sides were stripped back to bare wood, being careful not to sand through the veneers but removing the ultra-violet bleaching from the timber. On this occasion we used Epiphanes two-pack polyurethane, it also has the advantage been applied wet-on-wet (applying a coat every hour), this allows us to build up a thick layer of material in a single day. After two days drying time the varnish was sanded back and a final, finishing coat applied.

To achieve the best finish and avoid sags / runs, the varnish is applied with a gloss puller and then ‘topped off’ with a quality 3” brush. This leaves a high gloss, thick top layer and finish.
It was a great weekend for the start of the Flying Fifteen season for P&B sails, Simon Kneller and Dave Lucas secured victory at the Hayling Island SC Bulwark using a new set of P&B sails – we also finished 3rd!

At the GP14 Worlds P&B sails were in the hunt for the title, in a close finish Matt Burge and Paul Childs counted three firsts in their results and secured 4th overall.
