Glenridding Sailing Centre rebuilding after the recent storms

We are a sailing school based in Glenridding, Ullswater and we teach dinghy, keelboat and also Traditional Boat sailing courses. We are (to our knowledge) the only RYA Sailing School in the Lake District that offers sailing courses and activities on these beautiful 'old style' boats.

Here you can see our Traditional Boats at work. They are 17ft gaff-rigged and make a very pretty sight when seen on the lake. They are easy to sail, very stable and perfect for taster sessions, RYA Sailing Courses, family boat hire, 'Swallows & Amazons' inspired adventures and group activities (from corporate team building through to special needs and youth groups). Two of our boats were also used as 'extras' in the new 'Swallows & Amazons' film which is due out early next year.

Glenridding Sailing Centre is a small independent business run by MD Pete Meads and supports four staff full time (Steve Sykes, myself and Josh Wood), and several freelancers during the summer. A quick scan at our TripAdvisor reviews will hopefully back up our modest claim that we are quite good at what we do!

Storm Desmond and the subsequent destruction of the Centre has had a devastating effect on not only the future of the business, but also on the families who are currently supported by it. The village of Glenridding was also very badly hit, with most businesses flooded out, the car park was washed away and the Tourist Information centre was all but buried in the boulders and stones that were brought down the river by the incredible force of the water.

A key part to the recovery of Glenridding is ensuring visitors do return - and needless to say we are all overwhelmed by the amount of work that needs to be done in order to be ready for the 2016 season.
