Sten Mohr joins Victory Challenge

by Bert Willborg 30 Aug 2005 10:04 BST

He was the first north European to be ranked number one in the world in matchracing. He has a World Championship Gold and a European Championship Gold.

Sten Mohr, 36, has also been the expert commentator from the America's Cup for Viasat Sport in Denmark.

Now he is joining Victory Challenge as second helmsman when the team begin two boat training after this year's events.

"Sten Mohr is one of the best matchracing sailors in the world, which was more than confirmed by his number one world ranking. His joining us strengthens the team still further for the remainder of the 32nd America's Cup," says Magnus Holmberg, skipper and helmsman for Victory Challenge.

"There are two reasons for my choosing Victory Challenge, after being asked by others. One is the team itself, the team feeling and the potential I see in it. The second is that I will be helming my own boat, the second boat, which will assist the first, with Magnus at the helm, to become even better.

Sten Mohr also strengthens the Danish presence on the boat. The present team for Malmö-Skåne Louis Vuitton Acts 6 & 7 also includes Danes Kasper Vang and Jens Dolmer.

Sten Mohr is a very experienced matchracing sailor. He has competed internationally since 1994 and has beaten the other America's Cup team helmsmen many times. He has won the Trombini Match Race in Italy, the ACI Cup in Croatia and has finished second in, among others, the Congressional Cup in the USA and the Danish Open.

His medals from big championships include WC Gold in X-99 (fleet race) 2001; WC Bronze, Wold Championship in Matchracing 2000; one EC Gold and one EC Silver in the European Championships in Matchracing, between 1995 and 1999.

"I took a break from international matchracing in 2001, to spend more time with my family: my wife Ann-Marie and our boys, who are now seven, five and three."

He was the expert commentator for Viasat Sport during the America's Cup in Auckland 2002/2003 and has continued as a sailing commentator for Viasat since then.

As from 1 September this year he is a professional sailor in Victory Challenge.

Two boat training will begin in the middle of October, after Trapani Louis Vuitton Acts 7 & 8, which end on 9 October.
