405 Nationals at Porthpean Sailing Club

by Peter Perera 24 Aug 2005 16:17 BST 6-9 August 2005

Eleven 405's travelled to Porthpean Sailing Club for the National Championship. Only one Danish boat competed amongst the British Fleet.

Day 1, and the winds were light, only two races were sailed and these were very close. There was only one protest at the end of the day, evolving a Port and Starboard dispute. The 405's have a Pro-Am trophy, this involves the boat in 1st place being paired with the boat in last place, and then the 2nd boat paired with the boat in 2nd to last place, and so on. Due to the protest at the end of the first day Nick Ward and Tom Wright were laying in 2nd to last place and they were paired with Alex Summerfield and Peter Perera.

Day 2 and again the winds were light and proved to be very challenging. However all four races which had been planed were raced and at the end of the 2nd day William Twemlow and Oliver Hatton were still holding 1st place, and Nick Ward and Tom Wright were in equal 2nd with Alex Summerfield and Pete Perera.

Day 3, the winds had failed us, there was no wind which led to a postponement, the flag remained for the entire morning and a little of the afternoon. The sea breeze kicked in late and three of the planed four races were sailed. The last two races ended in the same order for the front runners, 1st Nick and Tom, 2nd will and Olli, and 3rd Alex and Pete.

Day 4, and the final day, again there were light winds and very shifty, however we were sent out, but once we were out the wind dropped and the fleet were sent in for an early lunch in hope of and increase in the breeze. Later on the wind increased and three very short races were sailed. It all came down to the last race. it was very close, and the beginning of the day Will and Olli and Tom and Nick were on equal points and with one race to go we were in for a interesting race. The race ended with Nick Ward and Tom Wright taking 1st place. Nick, Tom, Alex and Pete won the Pro-Amm after being paired on day one.
