Cadet Nationals at Weymouth & Portland Sailing Academy

Thursday dawned with a light onshore breeze, and race officer Nigel Vick was keen to start promptly in case the wind faded later in the day. This was to prove a wise move.

Race 8 was started in a gentle force 2 wind, and at the windward mark Will Rusden/Katherine Kinver led from Stephen Tiernan/Hugo Pullen, and these two rounded the leeward mark in close proximity just ahead of a chasing group, though unfortunately Rusden/Kinver were judged to have been OCS. Teirnan/Pullen soon established a strong lead on the second beat as the fleet all went up the right-hand side of the beat, whilst Joshua Pistol/Jamie Proffitt and Hamish Stone/Tim Carter emerged from the chasing group to take second and third places respectively from Ben Cornish /Sam Matson. Event leaders, Kate Allam/Katie Barr kept their series in tact by working up to seventh place by the finish, and retained the overall lead from Sephen Videlo/James Jopling who had made up a little ground by finishing in fifth place.

The wind began to weaken just as race 9 was started with a battle between the gradient wind and the sea breeze. Hamish Stone/Tim Carter judged the starting line perfectly to lead at the windward mark. However boats that had headed towards the right-hand side of the course had become becalmed, before setting spinnakers as the sea-breeze tried to establish itself. With the leeward mark now wind-less, the race officer was left with little choice but to abandon this race until the following day.

Friday dawned with a solid force 3-4 blowing off the mainland, much to the relief of organisers and competitors alike, and an early start would enable all ten races to be completed.

In the resailed race 9, Stephen Videlo/James Jopling led at the windward mark from Christopher Videlo/Theo Bull and Katherine Kimber/Steve Green, with Stephen Tiernan/Hugo Pullen and William Shepherd/Sophie Shepherd closing fast on Kimber/Green by the end of the second reach. During the next lap, the Videlo brothers were closely matched, with Christopher and Theo taking the lead by the end of the first sausage, only to be overhauled again on the next beat. Meanwhile Jonathon Moss/Sophie Dingwall were closing down the leading pair, and towards the end of the final beat were right in contention for line honours. However, Christopher Videlo/Theo Bull just managed to cross the line a few inches ahead of Stephen Videlo/James Jopling with Jonathan and Sophie third.

Going into the final race, Stephen Videlo and James Jopling had now clawed back to just one point behind Kate Allam and Katie Barr, so it was to be a head-to-head race for the Championships. In the event, Stephen and James had established a commanding lead by the first mark, which they held to the finish, whilst Kate and Katie were buried in the teens. The overall result was then put beyond all doubt when Kate and Katie uncharacteristically capsized at the gybe mark. Meanwhile Will Rusden/Katherine Kinver emerged in second place from James Rusden, now sailing with Matt Davanzo.

The series ended after a good weeks sailing despite the testing conditions in the middle of the week, with Stephen Videlo and James Jopling retaining the National title from Kate Allam and Katie Barr who had sailed a very consistent series. In third place, and first under-15 helm were Ben Cornish and Samuel Matson, who had three race wins under their belt from earlier in the week.

Alongside the main fleet, a further 18 boats contested the "Regatta" fleet for the very young or first-season helms, following 2 days of training earlier in the week. Race Officer David Kennedy had his work cut out to complete 7 races in the fickle winds of Wednesday and Thursday, but to the credit of competitors and organisers alike, a full series was completed. The first three races were won by Christopher Tiernan and Ashley Dunford, but by the end of the week, we had seen four more teams cross the finishing line first, namely James Payne/Ben Binmore, Jonathon Beer/Alexander Beer, Caroline Croft/Abigail Croft and Mylie Binmore/Erin Clark. More importantly, there was excellent sailing right through the fleet which bodes well for next year when these crews will join the main fleet.
