When you plan a sailing shoot you always worry about the weather. Now we use drones our anxieties are compounded especially at this time of year with the nights closing in. However, on a few occasions the stars align and all the effort is worthwhile.
We planned a shoot to announce the sponsorship of Dylan Fletcher while testing the new Lennon Racewear range at HISC – the weather forecast was poor but from many sources, conflicting – at least we had wind.
We managed a great stills shoot using our new underwater housing and got a load of useable stuff. We shot the usual video and to our surprise the sun poked through the clouds producing a wonderful milky water surface. We had about two hours of light left so went for it with the drone. Using our DJI Inspire 1 (rapidly becoming industry standard for videographers) we shot from the beach.
The tide was ripping, the sun was going down but the wind was up - the results speak for themselves.
Dylan and Mike went for a number of passes comparing boat speed and set up. Mike was using the new 2016 summer long john and Dylan was set up with the current winter DRYSYSTEM complete with the ground breaking Merino Base Layer woollen mix base layer. Both were also using the current Lennon Moth Sails.
The day ended perfectly – we got our stills, video and the most spectacular drone shot of Dylan's wipeout.
