Firefly Nationals at Felixstowe Ferry Sailing Club - Day 3

by Barney Smith 16 Aug 2005 07:26 BST 13-19 August 2005

Day three of the 59th Firefly Nationals at Felixstowe Ferry and finally the sun arrived! Two great races were held in a shifty force 2 to 3 with championships favourites Antony Gunstone and Lucie Hopkins being joined at the top of the leaderboard by Roger Morris and Sally Wakefield by close of play.

Race two for the Sussex Silver Firefly was won by Nigel Wakefield and Emily Saunderson who flew in from the right corner on the last beat surprising the long time leading group of Roger Morris/Sally Wakefield, Antony Gunstone/Lucie Hopkins and Steve Greaves/Elaine King.

Race three was finally won by 1995 champion Steve Tylecote sailing with Sally Wilson after some classic Firefly racing in which six boats spent time at the front of the fleet. Tylecote/Wilson only arrived at the front of the fleet within 100m of the finish line after 90 minutes of nip and tuck racing. Race officer Tim O’Leary was congratulated by the fleet on providing some superb racing given 100 degree wind shifts in both races.

After three races of the eight race series a pattern is beginning to emerge at the top of the leaderboard. 2004 Champions Gunstone/Hopkins, 1995 Champions Tylecote/Wilson and former team race world champion Morris/Wakefield are showing consistent form at the front of the fleet.

Tonight the Firefly Class holds its annual general meeting with a pub quiz to follow. With only one race scheduled tomorrow the challenge will be to drink the bar dry again at the club!

The National Firefly Association would like to thank class sponsors Crewsaver who supplied over 100 prizes for buddies and improvers, craftinsure.com, and Dinghy Sailing Magazine.
