Harken Musto Performance Skiff Nationals at Paignton Sailing Club - Day 2

by Ben Schooling 10 Jul 2015 21:49 BST 9-12 July 2015

Race 4 - After a general recall, the fleet started cleanly under U flag again. In 8 knots of breeze and a tricky lumpy swell from the SE, Dave Annan sailed a great first beat and rounded first overlapped with Bruce and Alex Knight in 3rd. The run was widely split with Ian Trotter and Alastair Conn finding pressure on the left to pull through to 3rd and 4th. Bruce led at the leeward mark from Knight and Annan. By the next windward Keen had a narrow lead from Knight, Trotter, Annan and Schooling. At the finish Keen had taken his 4th victory from Knight with Schooling pulling through to 3rd.

Race 5 - After a short postponement the committee boat moved to windward in search of more pressure and some flatter water with the fleet beginning to feel queasy. The fleet got away cleanly in 9kts with Rick Perkins leading the fleet out to the right. At the windward mark Schooling had a steady lead over Dan Kilsby with Keen, George Hand and Trotter in close pursuit. Schooling retained his lead over the group with Sam Barker showing great pace to pull through to 2nd at the next windward. The positions remained that way to the finish with Keen in 3rd. After another short postponement the race officer made the wise decision to send the fleet ashore in the fading breeze.

A positive experience at the Stokes Bay Skiff Open I sailed the Stokes Bay Skiff Open using the Musto Skiff X mainsail. Saturday was Northerly 5-15 knots and Sunday was Northerly 7-20 knots. Both days were very gusty and shifty. I'm 74kgs, 5'10" and lightly built these days from too much cycling! Posted on 29 Apr
