The final day dawned to wall to wall sunshine and a moderate Easterly giving breeze up the estuary but making the stretch through the town very messy.

The start was clean once again and after a short beat with the tide to Crossways, Taxi and Alex lead the pack down the Town side of the run with Tom Stewart and Phil Dalby in second and Chris Jennings and Pete Horn third. Series leaders Richard Whitworth and Sam Mottershead were well back and gambled on the Portlemouth shore.

As the fleet approached Mill Bay buoy the breeze collapsed and the leaders were stuck in the adverse current. Boats from behind brought up new breeze and it became a case of the first will be last. Jen and Chris Dodds navigated the park up expertly to take the lead from Sophie Mackley and James Warren with the early leaders dropping well back.

Over the lengthy tour of the harbour, Jen and Chris extended to take a special win which was loudly applauded from the crowd of spectators. In a day for the lady helms, Sophie and James held on to take second from Dave Winder and Pippa Taylor. Taxi and Alex recovered to fourth ahead of Tom and Phil.

Richard and Sam, needing to better their discard of a fifth, gambled on the Portlemouth shore on the last run but failed to get any higher up the fleet. This left Matt Biggs and John Hackett looking for a top three finish in the afternoon race to take the title.

If the morning flights had experienced challenging conditions, the afternoon was to surpass it. With the wind coming straight over the Portlemouth shore, it was a reaching start into a building ebb tide. After a general recall that caught four boats but none of the leading contenders, Chris Gould and Caroline Croft made the best start in the middle of line. Those up near the Portlemouth shore lost the breeze, including Matt and John who were struggling back in the teens on the beat to Yalton.

However, the Fat Lady was barely clearing her throat as the positioning of mark X in the strongest tide in the harbour and in an area of dead air was to cause distress to all but a few. Chris and Caroline were able to round ahead on some pressure but the chasing pack were swept away down tide leaving the next group to gleefully round in the next bit of pressure. John and Katy Meadowcroft were the main beneficiaries and took up the chase in third behind Jon Turner and Richard Parslow.

Matt and John then played their Joker to cross to the Portlemouth side and find some pressure to bring them up to challenge for the third place they needed. However, mark X beckoned for one last time. Arriving with Jon and Richard, they were both swept away and watched as almost ten boats rounded inside them. Their title challenge was over and they eventually struggled home in 13th.

Chris and Caroline navigated all these challenges expertly to take their second bullet of the week with John and Katy getting by far and away their best result in second. Roger and Jane Gilbert also got their best result of the week in third, followed home by Dave Hayes and Jonny Radcliffe.

So, the title goes to Richard Whitworth and Sam Mottershead who maintained a very consistent series in a wide range of conditions. In a highly competitive week they showed a mastery of Salcombe's complexities and the crucial ability to escape from the pack.
