by J Class Association 1 Jul 2015 13:08 BST 1 July 2015

The world famous J Class yachts are now heading from competing in Falmouth to Cowes, where they will compete in the RYS Bicentenary Regatta, from the 25th to 31st July. They will be berthed at Ocean Village, Southampton, and racing will be from the RYS Line with much excitement and anticipation.

The comprehensive book “Ranger to Rainbow” covers the rebirth of the Class from late 1990s to the last UK based regattas in 2012 is now available from your local Waterstones!

This new book is a detailed account of the development of the J Class yachts, primarily from 1996 when author, David Pitman, first became involved with the rebuild of Velsheda.

He was Secretary of the class for more than 12 years overseeing the rebirth of these great yachts, from the launch of a new Ranger in 2002, then Hanuman, Lionheart and finally Rainbow in 2012.

Meanwhile, Shamrock V, Velsheda and Endeavour all underwent major rebuilds. It is packed with many technical and sailing images of these iconic yachts.

Other J Yachts, including SVEA are now under construction or in design stage. The book details an account of the build process, the technical development of the yachts, the crewing and the Class Association.
132 pages A4 packed with colour images.

Reviews

“What a wonderful account of the past 10 years in the class and how great to have it written by the one who was on board and on the inside of it all. I read it in one go” - JLvB

“In this book David recounts the trials and tribulations of trying to manage a fleet of the worlds most expensive racing yachts. His skills in getting agreement from some of the strongest characters in yachting, who each have interests in proportion to the size of the budgets involved, are well underplayed in this fascinating book.” - MB

“It’s a great read about how the fleet was reborn and how the class developed from three boats to seven. Packed with sailing pictures and technical detail that is amazing. And they are supposed to be sailing in the UK again in 2015. Can’t wait!” - JW
