21 June 2015
On the longest day of the year, sailors from all over the Midlands gathered at Hollowell Sailing Club for one of the most prestigious events in the Midland sailing calendar. In total 45 sailors took part in this year's Laser and Solo Open, which was sponsored by Rooster Sailing.
Conditions on the day were good, with a moderate westerly wind sweeping across the reservoir. This gave the host's team a slight advantage, as they were familiar with how the wind behaves on the water.
There was a similar format to the usual Sunday Series racing with three races being run over the cause of the day.
The Solo Open was won by Stuart Hydon from Shustoke Sailing Club - he dominated the day, winning all three of the Solo races. Behind him came Kevin Hall from Northampton Sailing Club. Kevin succeeded in getting two second places. Third was Alan Bishop from Girton Sailing Club, who was third in all three Solo races.
In the Laser Open, Cameron Smith from Chelmarsh Sailing Club stole the day with three spectacular first place positions. Behind him was Ed Bolton King from RAF Sailing Club. Third place overall went to Jack Rockett from Barnt Green Sailing Club. Jack gained a second and a third place.
Following the day's racing prizes were awarded, which were generously donated by the event sponsor, Rooster.
Nicola Wilkinson, Hollowell's Commodore, thanked everyone involved in the making the event such a success and said that she looked forward to seeing each person again next year.
Looking forward to the coming weekend, Hollowell Sailing Club will be hosting the Anglian Water Junior Series on Saturday. Then on Sunday, the Summer Series continues.
