The inaugural yachtgrandprix.com Sigma 33 South West Championship were blessed with great conditions throughout a day's intense racing in Falmouth Bay recently.

The event organized by St Mawes SC consisted of three windward leeward courses followed by a regatta course taking the boats back to be finished by cannon shot at the club's line.

Excelle, skippered by Toby Claridge and John Fox dominated the day's racing winning all four races. The crew gave a tour de force in boat handling and showed the skills that took them to 5th of 18 boats at the 2014 nationals in Abersoch. The four local Falmouth boats were joined by Duellist who braved a strong headwind to travel to the event from Fowey.

St Mawes is planning a bigger two day event for 2016 and hoping to attract more boats to travel to Falmouth.

Toby Claridge said: "It was a really good day, lots of close racing and very well organised." Toby is the South West rep for the class association and hoping to encourage more people to get into the class, Toby said: "The Sigma has to offer the best value proper yacht racing you can get, people who have raced them have such an affection for them they are great boats. We are hoping to stimulate interest in the Sigma in Falmouth and hope next year's two day event will encourage more boats to make the trip down west."

Overall Results:

1st Excelle
2nd Tresillian
3rd Afrita
4th Jambo
5th Duellist
