IRC Solent Region Championship - Day 1: The Clarkson Cup

by Graham Nixon 21 May 2015 22:07 BST 16 May 2015

The forecast for the day was a 10 knot NW wind gradually dropping to 6 knots towards the end of racing. In the event we had 15 -20 knots from the NW until about 1330 when the wind started to slowly drop but still maintaining 10 knots until the end of racing. With a good deal of sunshine it made for an excellent day to be on the water and out racing.

Unfortunately not as boats turned out to race as hoped for. All classes were combined for a single start for both races of the day. The first race was a windward/leeward course and the second round the cans.

In race one all the Class 1 boats finished within three minutes of each other making for close and exciting racing with changing positions especially on the runs. Peter Gair, determined to retain last year's trophy, was first to finish in his Mills 39, Zero II, followed home by Peter Morton in his First 34,7, Salvo, but lost out on corrected time to Salvo. Andrew McIrvine in the First 40, La Reponse was third on both elapsed and corrected time. Xinska, the X40 of Bernard Olesinski was fourth on corrected time and Nick Haigh in So Steamy, a Farr 280, finished fifth.

In race two, with the exception of Zero II, it was all change. La Reponse took first place on corrected time followed by Zero II in second. Salvo and So Steamy had identical corrected times at 2:10:03 so took joint third place with Xinska coming in fifth. The course enabled spinnakers to be flown on both downwind and off wind legs and race times were impressive.

Overall results in Class One were La Reponse in first, Zero II second, Salvo third, So Steamy fourth and Xinska fifth.

In the other classes Huw Phillips in his HOD 35 Malice represented Class 2, Teresa Whelan in the X342 Xarifa Class 3 and Richard and Ursula Hollis in the X 95 Crakajax Class 4.

By having a combined start on essentially the same course with a single different leg length for Class 1/2 and 3/4 it made for close racing which the Race Management Team hope you enjoyed as much as they did watching it. All the best for the rest of the Series.
