Laser Open at Weir Wood Sailing Club

by Nick Bush 6 May 2015 10:02 BST 2 May 2015

The 2015 Laser Open at Weir Wood Sailing Club on Saturday the 2nd May was sailed in a shifty force three to four which was moving around from the East to the South. There were 26 standard Lasers, 15 from WWSC. In the Radial fleet there were six boats and three in the 4.7's. In total there were 11 visitors.

The Race Officer set a simple course, with triangle and sausage, with a number of laps depending on wind conditions.

In the first race, after a couple of general recalls, David Giles got off to a good start and kept his lead to win followed by Rob Cage and Simon Barrington. In the second race, Sergio Messina, who had a good lead capsized downwind on the final lap which led to Bruce Ramshaw taking to the lead and winning the race.

At lunch it was Rob Cage in the lead with a 2nd and 4th, however he and Rich Bailey had to sit out the third race after being black flagged. The race was subsequently won by David Giles. In the final race Rich Bailey went hard right up the first beat which turned into a comfortable lead he held until the end.

Overall, David Giles won the event, with 2nd going to Rob Cage and 3rd taken by Sergio Messina In the Radial fleet, Elliot Marks raced well to win the first three races. In the final race, Elliot matched Lewis Humphries, to let Tim Humphries (dad?) through for the win.

In the 4.7's Debra Hughes was sailing very quickly, up amongst the radial fleet and won her races with ease.
