Plymouth Gin Series at Royal Plymouth Corinthian Yacht Club - Week 3

by Chris Hampe 21 Apr 2015 10:24 BST 19 April 2015

As the spring heat wave continued it was a depleted fleet that assembled for the third week of the Royal Plymouth Corinthian Yacht Club's Plymouth Gin Series. With Several competitors away to compete in events in the Solent, other sailors were caught out by the various road closures in place due to the running of the Plymouth Half Marathon.

Race 5 got underway after a short delay with a big committee boat bias the bulk of the fleet fought for position with Daryl Conyers open 5.7 winning the favored end. Soon however the Prima 38 of Alan Meredith was into clean air and able to extend a lead to dominate the results winning the race under all three rating systems. 2nd place in IRC and ORC went to Steve Wassell's J24 Dog's Jorrocks who look like the only boat that can cause an upset to the Prima 38 with one week to go. 2nd in NHC went to Robert Fletchers First 34.7 I Say Ding Dong piping Daryl Conyers in Slipknot by just two seconds.

For race 6 the length of the course was shortened, But set to three laps instead of two and with the Bias on the start line removed boats were spread along the line at the start. Unfortunately two boats were called OCS with Robert Fletcher's I Say Ding Dong who redressed after being a long way over the line whilst the Seascape 27 Sanuk of John McLaren were just over and failed to return.

At the end of the race the three Seascape 18's were having a close race and finished within 21 seconds of each other with Jon Pegg leading the boats home. Under NHC however the race win went to Peter Wanstall ahead of Hugh Spencer. In IRC and ORC it was business as usual with the Prima 38 Al Fresco taking the win from the J24 Dog's Jorrocks.

Next week is the final two races in the series and will be followed by the Prize giving in the Royal Plymouth Corinthian Yacht Club where thanks to our sponsor's Plymouth Gin there will be lots of prizes to be awarded and copious amounts of free gin.
