Sean McCarter to speak at RYA Scotland Annual Awards Dinner

by Claire Caffrey, RYA Scotland 20 Dec 2014 09:17 GMT 31 January 2015

As well as celebrating the successes and commitment of Scotland's boating community at the RYA Scotland Annual Awards Dinner, guests at the event can also look forward to an exciting and inspiring after dinner talk from Sean McCarter. Sean will be giving his talk at the dinner on 31 January 2015 at the Glasgow Science Centre, giving people from all over Scotland an opportunity to get an insight into his amazing and epic achievements.

Irish skipper Sean McCarter successfully led Derry~Londonderry~Doire to fourth place overall in the Clipper 2013-14 Round the World Yacht Race. Sean has recently hit the headlines again today (19 December) after it was announced that he is to be awarded with the 2014 Rod Stephens Trophy for Outstanding Seamanship from The Cruising Club of America (CCA).

The award is given "for an act of seamanship that significantly contributes to the safety of a yacht or one or more individuals at sea".

During the 2013-14 race Sean and his team faced some of the world's toughest conditions as well as overcoming the ultimate drama on the hi-seas, not only a medevac in the Southern Ocean but also a Man Overboard mid-Pacific Ocean. For over an hour Sean led his team in a successful man-overboard search and recovery.

Claire Caffrey from RYA Scotland commented: "It is such a huge privilege to have Sean join us for our Annual Awards in January. The fact that he is to be honoured with the Rod Stephens Trophy is testament to how outstanding his achievements are and we am sure that our boating and sailing community in Scotland will be delighted to have the opportunity listen to him talk about his successes and challenges first hand.

"The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race is one of the biggest challenges out there and offers up a truly unique experience. We look forward to getting the chance to meet Sean and hear more about his race".

Tickets for the RYA Scotland Annual Awards Dinner are on sale for anyone to purchase through the RYA online shop in the ticket section and are priced at just £40 – www.rya.org.uk.
