Laser Masters Nationals at Whitstable Yacht Club - Overall

by Eddie Mays 10 Jul 2005 23:03 BST 8-10 July 2005

The sun came out to play today on the North Kent coast. Unfortunately there was no wind this morning and no sea breeze developed during the day and it was not possible to complete any more races and this made a disappointing end to an event that had promised much.

The conditions had been better on Saturday. In the Standard fleet Steve Cockerill (Stokes Bay) added two wins, in Races 2 & 3, and a 4th place in the final race to yesterday's 2nd place to lead the fleet overnight by two points.

Dutchman Martjin Ozinga (WSV de Doordrijvers) scored a 2nd & a 3rd before winning the last race and his compatriot & club mate Lennart Crossen did almost as well scoring 4th, 2nd and 2nd. No problems with the tide there then. The first seven places are filled by Apprentice Masters. Lying 8th overall is ex-World Champion Keith Wilkins (Chelmarsh).

In the Radial fleet Nigel Thomas (Weston) continued his winning ways by taking the 1st and 3rd of today's races. Second place overall is shared by Steve Gray (Whitstable) and Dutchman Henk Wittenberg (ZWVU). They have both scored top five placings in every race. Two points behind them Great Grand Master Bill Watson (Blithfield) is just holding off the challenge from another G.G.Master Ninian Eadie.

Two clubs shared the honours in the Standard Rig with Stokes Bay and the Dutch club WSV de Doordrijvers having three helms each in the top six. It was another Solent club that took the main honour in the Radial fleet with Nigel Thomas from Weston scoring three wins for his overall victory.
