12 July 2005
If you have ever wondered just what goes on at Thames Water’s Farmoor Reservoir near Oxford, you can come along and find out on 12 July 2005.
The Oxford Sailing Club, which is based at the reservoir, is delighted to invite the local public to an Open Day. From 3pm until 9pm, members of the public can come and meet the people who already enjoy the amenities at Farmoor and find out how they too can benefit from them.
There will be free boat trips around the reservoir and teas provided by the local Women’s Institute. Plans for the construction of the new Pontoon will be on display, to show just how much benefit disabled sailors, as well as children and adults will get from developing the existing facilities. The Pontoon Project was launched last year, with local people and businesses being encouraged to help raise £200,000 to build a new pontoon that will give more disabled people more access to the water. During the Open Day, people will be able to buy a ‘plank’ to help towards the cost of the construction.
Oxford Sailability, the group of disabled sailors who get so much from sailing at Farmoor, meets every Tuesday evening. They will be taking to the water as usual on 12 July, so visitors will be able to see first hand, exactly how much freedom and enjoyment disabled people can get from sailing.
