Navigators & General Mirror Nationals at Brixham Yacht Club - Overall

by Rob Bellfield 17 Aug 2014 09:15 BST 13-16 August 2014

Rachel Grayson and Gemma Francis Burnett sweep the board with a race to spare

Another light and shifty wind greeted the sailors at the start of Day 4 of the Navigators & General Mirror National Chamnpionship.

Race 1 got away at the third attempt under a black flag, only to be abandoned moments later because the windward mark was detatched from it's anchor.

The forth attempt was more successful, but the light westerly wind was as shifty as ever. Dave & Ed Coady led at 1st mark with, Shane McLoughlin & Oscar Langan from Ireland 2nd. The reach was very tight and Shane & Oscar got past Dave & Ed at the gybe mark and held the lead to the finish. At the start of the 2nd beat Reg & Gemma were up to 3rd. Dave went left, but this time it did not pay with more pressure on the right. This allowed Henry & Jamie Rastrick to get up to 2nd at the windward mark with Reg & Gemma 3rd and Sarah & Sandy 4th. Positions did not change on final run. This was enough to give Reg & Gemma the championshipwith a race to spare.

Race 2 got away first time under a black flag in a much more solid force 3-4 breeze with full hiking and planing downwind. Reg & Gemma lead at the first mark with David and Ed 2nd and Sarah & Sandy 3rd. These positions remained unchanged to the finish. Eleanor Keers & Izzy Pugh in "Peanut" put in a commendable performance to finish 4th.

When asked what made the difference Reg said she didn't know, she just sailed as she learned on the water at Beaver SC - it just shows that persistence in the boat, a long term crewing partnership and consistency in the face of a shifting breeze with varied conditions were important to achieving the results that result in becoming a champion.

To cap it all dad Matt also became Mirror Singlehanded National Champion - well done the Graysons! Brixham YC have run an excellent Championship. The Irish contingent have now arrived ready to do battle for the European Championship next week.
