The art of succeeding in the moth class is to be ahead of the game on equipment technology without giving away your secret to the entire fleet. This is not as easy at it sounds, since the moth sailors are so friendly in the boat park it is hard not to look closely at what the guy next to you is doing. Also the fact that you must be able to do research and development, and there is no place better then at a regatta to see if your idea works or not.

There are many little things that sailors are doing that you can't even see but the bigger eye-grabbing item, these days is the aerodynamic package on your boat. One of the sailors this weekend at the EFG MothEuroCup Act 4, hosted by Thunersee Yacht Club, showed up at the boat part with his version of the perfect package. The boat without the mast looks more like a airplane then a boat. In this class it is not just about how you sail around the racecourse, but sometimes how creative you are in the workshop.

This past weekend on Lake Thun we completed Act 4 of the MothEuroCup (www.motheurocup.com). Unfortunately, the wind did not show up in full force. The only day that we conducted any racing was on Saturday due to the little wind we had on Friday and lack of wind on Sunday. The two completed races on Saturday were during the morning "Oberwind". Similar as to the morning breeze on Lake Garda, this a katabatic wind, draining cold air from the mountains down to the lake. The two locals Christopher Rast and Matthias Renker with Arnaud Psarofaghis (Moth European Champion 2009) from Geneva and Giovanni Galeotti were fighting it out at the top. Chris and Arnaud, who just finished the Moth Worlds placing a point apart in the final results had some laughs on the water that you can see in the day 2 video.

Even though only two races were completed the prize money, provided by our title sponsor EFG, was awarded to the top three sailors with a value amount of 1800 Euros. Not only did the top sailors get awards, we also had a grab bag of merchandise and vouchers from our series sponsors SLAM & MACH2.

Please visit the official website in the news section, www.motheurocup.com, to find out more about the sailors competing and where to sign up for the next regatta! Wittensee, Germany August 29th-31st is the next venue, we look forward to seeing you!
