Over 200 Cadet sailors start to arrive at the WPNSA

by Peter Collyer 6 Aug 2014 19:41 BST 9-22 August 2014

Over 200 young sailors will be arriving at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy in the coming days to take part in one of the highlights of the junior dinghy racing calendar – the Cadet Class National Championships and World Championships.

The National Championships run from 9th to 12th August and will see the home fleet challenged by a number of foreign teams who will use the event as their warm-up for the Worlds, which begin with an opening ceremony on 15th August. The UK Cadet Class Association is looking forward to welcoming teams from Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Netherlands, Poland and Ukraine to compete with the 10-boat GBR team for the honour of being crowned World Champion when the event finishes on 22nd August.

However, this 2-week festival of sailing is not just about the top sailors battling for national and international honours. During the National Championships, a coached bronze fleet will give an opportunity for new helms and crews to experience the fantastic atmosphere of a big international regatta, while the World Championships will be accompanied by a promotional regatta in which the strong home fleet will be joined by many European boats who are making the journey to get the experience sailing at the venue of the 2012 Olympic regatta. Off the water the fun will continue with a full programme of social events that will make it a family event to remember.
